Crib Rail
Choosing a crib for your baby is the first of many important decisions you will make for your child. While shopping for the crib may be fun and exciting, it must also taken quite seriously. Each year many children are injured or die in their own cribs. Crib safety standards have come a long way in the last 30 years, but it is up to you as parents to ensure that the crib you choose is not going to harm your little one.
Crib Safety Design
Cribs are designed with vertical rods or plates to hold the baby safely contained inside. These bars may be too far apart and pose a potential threat to children if they get their head solid. Vertical slats should be no more than 2 +3 / 8 inches apart. All new cribs are built to meet this standard, but to be sure that you must always measure manger.
Corner posts of the crib should be no higher than 1 / 16 inch of end panels. This is so that the child can not get a loop of clothes accidentally caught on the ends. Choose a crib without any cuts on the ends, as these may pose a threat for small hands and feet to be imminent. The top rails of the sides at their highest position should be at least 26 inches above the top of the mattress support at its lowest position.
When the child can pull himself up to standing position with the mattress support on the lowest setting. You should stop using the crib once the height of the child is more than ¾ the height of the raised rail. The fall of the crib sides should be closed securely and requires at least ten pounds of pressure to release. Crib hardware must be smooth without sharp points or protruding edges.
Crib Mattress Safety
The mattress itself is another safety concern. Choose a mattress that fits snugly inside the crib. Cribs and crib mattresses are designed with specific sizes for this purpose. Infants can become wedged between the mattress and the crib if there is even a small amount space. Use two fingers rule. If you can fit two fingers in-between the mattress and crib in the room is too large, and a new mattress to be obtained.
Never leave the plastic cover on mattress when you get it home. Also avoid using plastic sheets as these may cause choking hazard to infants. Choose a firm mattress, so the child located on top instead of draining into it. Use tight bedding on the mattress too.
Baby Bed Safety is an important aspect of thinking through of an antique cradle. While the style may go well with the interior of the room remember that cribs made before 1974 will probably not meet safety standards. When you buy the crib be sure to measure all aspects of the manger, even those who are completely new.
Most cribs must be assembled at home. Incorrect assembly can make an otherwise safe manger of a security instead. Follow the instructions completely and always test the crib features off before you put a baby inside.
